The other day, I heard someone interviewing Whoppi Goldberg.
In this interview, she was talking about how terrible it was that President Bush got re-elected and how no, those who said they would go to Canada if Kerry lost didn't really mean it. I suspect that she went on to bloviate about her views about politics, but to be honest, I don't really remember.
The reason I don't remember is because her views are immaterial. Don't take that the wrong way. I don't mean that she isn't entitled to her opinion and her views, but her views on the issues have very little relevance to the lives of most of the people in the United States or the rest of the world, for that matter. The lifestyle she lives, the demands on her time, and the challenges she faces are very different from those of most of us.
Now, I can appreciate the fact that Whoppi has achieved a certain success in her chosen profession. In fact, I have seen some things that she has done that I liked. (The Sister Act movies come to mind.)
It really amazes me that the media (and unfortunately many of the public) place so much emphasis on what celebrities think about politics. I mean, what experience, knowledge, or expertise do these folks possess that makes their opinions more viable, relevant, or accurate than my next door neighbor? I mean, what do they do to make a living? The are very good at pretending to be someone else! Just because they are famous and have a lot of money doesn't make their opinions any more valuable than anyone else's in such matters. In fact, I would submit that most of these folks have less credibility simply because of their lifestyle.
Think about it. Would you like to have Paris Hilton making governmental policy? How about Dennis Rodman or Kobe Bryant? Cher? Eminem?
Just a thought...
